You can also turn the entire pair of cycling shorts inside out, which adds an extra layer of regular fabric between the silicone gripper and the rest of the laundry load. This simple pre-wash step eliminates the vast majority of the abrasive contact that causes premature damage to the delicate silicone structure.
Wash cycle settings that reduce silicone stress
Select a low-spin, gentle agitation wash program with lukewarm or cool water, as high-speed spinning can twist the leg cuffs violently and stretch the silicone grippers out of their original circular shape. Avoid using any harsh cleaning additives that leave a sticky or abrasive residue, because these substances can break down the soft flexible structure of the silicone over repeated washes, making it brittle and far less grippy over time. Never overload the washing machine, because a tightly packed load forces the silicone edges to grind against heavy, rough fabrics for the full length of the cycle. A loosely arranged, small load with only similar soft performance garments keeps movement gentle and prevents unnecessary shear force from being applied to the gripper surface.
Post-wash handling that preserves silicone flexibility
Never place the cycling apparel in a high-heat tumble dryer, because sustained high temperatures will cause the silicone material to harden, crack, and lose its original elastic grip permanently. Instead, lay the shorts flat on a clean, dry absorbent towel, or hang them on a wide, rounded hanger that does not pinch or stretch the silicone gripper edge out of shape.
