Pre-wash debris removal for fine mesh openings
Before placing your custom cycling apparel in the wash, hold each mesh panel section under a slow, gentle stream of cool running water to flush out loose trapped particles of road dust, sand, and dried sweat crystals that get stuck in the tiny mesh openings. Many of these small gritty particles have sharp edges that can tear and fray the thin mesh fibers if they get rubbed back and forth during a full wash cycle. Use your fingertips to lightly brush across the surface of the mesh in the direction of the weave, to dislodge any stubborn bits that are caught deep inside the gaps, without applying enough pressure to stretch or distort the delicate structure. This quick pre-rinse step removes the most abrasive contaminants before they can cause any permanent damage during the main wash.
Wash cycle setup to prevent mesh stretching and tearing
Turn the entire garment completely inside out before placing it in the washing machine, so the exposed mesh panels are pressed against the smoother inner surface of the main fabric, instead of rubbing directly against other garments or the machine drum. Select a no-tangle, low-agitation gentle cycle with cool or lukewarm water, and avoid high spin speeds that can twist the thin mesh panels violently out of their original shape. Keep the load small and loosely packed, so there is no heavy weight from thicker garments pressing down on the delicate mesh sections and causing them to warp or tear under pressure. Skip all fabric softening additives entirely, because their oily residue will coat the fine mesh openings, clog up the breathable gaps, and ruin the lightweight air flow performance that the mesh panels were designed to deliver.
Drying and post-wash care to preserve mesh structure
Never toss the custom cycling apparel into a high-heat tumble dryer, because extreme heat will shrink the fine mesh fibers unevenly, creating permanent puckering and distorting the size and shape of the tiny breathable openings. Instead, lay the garment flat on a clean, dry absorbent towel in a well-ventilated area, and gently reshape each mesh panel back to its original flat, even alignment while it is still damp. Do not hang the full garment by its mesh sections, because the weight of the wet fabric will pull the thin mesh fibers downward and create permanent stretching that leaves the panels sagging and misshapen. Once fully dry, inspect each mesh panel lightly with your fingertips to make sure no fibers are twisted or tangled, before folding the apparel for storage.
