Sublimated prints on custom cycling apparel offer vibrant, long-lasting colors that do not sit on top of the fabric, but are instead dyed directly into the fibers themselves. This makes them more durable than traditional surface prints, but they still require specific care during washing to keep their colors sharp and prevent gradual fading over many rides.
Wash Inside Out to Minimize Direct Abrasion
Turning sublimated cycling apparel completely inside out before washing is the single most effective step you can take to protect the print. Even though the design is dyed into the fabric, the outer surface still faces constant friction against the washing machine drum, other garments, and any zippers or hardware in the same load. Flipping the garment inside out places the printed side against the smoother inner layer of the fabric, which acts as a cushion and prevents the tiny, repeated abrasions that can slowly dull the brightest colors over dozens of wash cycles.
Use Cool Water and Gentle, Residue-Free Detergents
High water temperature is one of the main causes of gradual color loss in sublimated prints, even if the change is not immediately visible. Always wash sublimated gear in cool or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle to keep the dye molecules stable and locked into the fabric. Choose a mild, sport-specific detergent that is free from optical brighteners, heavy fragrances, and bleaching agents, as these additives can interact with the dyes and cause uneven fading or subtle color shifts over time. Liquid detergents that dissolve completely in cool water are preferable, as undissolved powder particles can create concentrated spots of cleaning agents that may affect the print.
Avoid Fabric Softeners and High-Heat Drying
Fabric softeners and dryer sheets leave a thin, waxy coating on the surface of technical fabrics, which can trap moisture against sublimated prints and make the colors look dull or hazy. They can also reduce the moisture-wicking and breathability of the fabric, which defeats the purpose of performance cycling apparel. After washing, air dry sublimated garments by laying them flat or hanging them in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight and high-heat dryers, as prolonged exposure to intense heat and UV rays can break down the dyes and cause the prints to fade prematurely.
